Rushed Roofing = Shoddy Work?
Kimberly St. Louis is a Home Inspector with A-Pro, and she says she expected to see a lot of damage after two Spring hail storms pummeled 10,00 - 30,000 homes in the Madison area. She was surprised, though, by how many roofs she found damaged AFTER they were replaced. ''I've been absolutely stunned.'' St. Louis said. '' When I get up on the roof and somebody says 'The roof is brand new', at the amount of damage that's on the roof - especially on the East side of Town after that 2nd hail storm.  She reports seeing chipped, cracked and bruised shingles, which could result in water seeping through into the insulation, and possible into the drywall which could cause mold.

Glen Loyd of the Wi Division of Consumer Protection says, even roof replaced by reputable roofers can sometimes leak, but a good company will return to fix the leak, which is why he says it is so! important to choose a company that will still be around in the Spring - that's when most leaks will appear.''Good roofers are going to be in business for a long time so you call them up and they come out and fix the leak free of charge.'' Loyd says.  ''But if you hired a group that starts up in the Summer and disbands in the Winter, you probably won't be able to find them.''
Loyd says roofers are not required to be licensed or trained.

He and St. Louis recommend consumers check out their roof with someone from the Company they hired to make sure there are no obvious signs of cracks, dents or flaws that could lead to problems this Spring.
